SATURDAY APRIL 12

Makam Workshop
with Tev Stevig

Boston-based musician Tev Stevig offers an intensive workshop, exploring the modal, improvisational system of Turkish makam. The workshop is geared towards experienced vocalists and instrumentalists, with some prior knowledge of makam useful. We will focus on the theory, practice, and repertoire of several makams.

When: Saturday, April 12, noon-5pm
Where: Montague Center, MA

FRIDAY APRIL 18

Kaethe Hostetter
with O Ksenos

at the Montague Common Hall

NYC-based violinist/composer Kaethe Hostetter presents Impressions of Ethopia, a collection of musical vignettes sourcing from her 11 years living in Addis Ababa. Kaethe transports you to the bustling streets of the East African metropolis, evoking the crackling sounds of a saxophone blaring out of a barbershop radio, a shepherd's flute melody turned dub reggae, the fervent dancing on packed dirt floors of a rural honey-wine bar, and the funky big band psychedelic sounds of Ethiopia's "Golden Era".

The solo multimedia project uses  electronics and loops, storytelling, video projection, to share a personal journey and be a door to a world that is now undergoing serious ethnic conflict.

With an opening set by local favorites O Ksenos (Jesse Bay, Heather Kuhn, Clarissa Lyons, Rafe Wolman) playing Greek traditional dances/folk songs and Rembetika.

When: Friday, April 18, 7pm
Where: Montague Common Hall, Montague Center
